Low-level laser therapy (also known as cold laser therapy or – most recently and most specifically – photobiomodulation therapy) is a light-based technology proven to be highly effective in the treatment of musculoskeletal problems and other conditions, as well as in wound healing. This effective technology is non-invasive, non-toxic, and is currently in use in many countries around the world.

The BioFlex low-level laser therapy system includes flexible arrays of light-emitting diodes and a laser probe, which produce visible red and invisible near-infrared wavelengths of light energy.
This light energy interacts with cell receptors to produce photochemical reactions that have a positive effect on cellular metabolism and allow for recovery from damage and inflammation.
Because the system affects blood circulating around injured or diseased areas, as well as underlying tissues, the overall clinical effect is to accelerate the healing response and decrease pain, inflammation, oedema and associated symptoms.
BioFlex treatment costs are directly proportional to the total duration (in minutes) of the treatment session, and calculated based on a rate of $ 115 per 60 minutes (taxes not included).
There are no known long-term side effects of the BioFlex system, which only uses light in the red and infrared wavelength ranges.
Properly applied, the BioFlex system will not cause:
In the case of patients suffering from cancer, the BioFlex system should not be used over malignant lesions.
In the case of pregnant patients, the BioFlex system should not be used over the lower back, abdomen and pelvis. Caution must also be used in treating non-pelvic regions during pregnancy.
The red and near infrared light from the BioFlex light emitting diode arrays does not cause damage to the eye. However, the patient and the practitioner or technician must both wear safety glasses when the laser probe is used.
Nature of the condition, tissue depth and bone size are factors in the duration of individual treatment sessions. For most conditions, standard durations are between 30 and 40 minutes. However, an individual treatment session may extend to one hour or even more where conditions are more severe and involve deeper body parts.
JUMAplus is equipped with two BioFlex diode arrays, which makes it possible to treat two separate conditions (e.g. hip and elbow) in a single treatment session. More time would typically be spent on the most severe condition or on the deeper body part.
Treatment and therefore treatment duration are tailored to the individual patient. If time is a factor of great concern for a particular patient, it may be possible to reduce individual treatment session duration, to the extent only that this does not adversely affect treatment efficacy.
Generally speaking, one to around 30 (or more) treatments may be required, depending on the extent and severity of the condition.
In certain circumstances, longer individual treatment sessions can result in a reduced total number of treatments for each condition.
Acute Conditions
With acute conditions, it may be appropriate to treat patients on a daily basis for four days in a row or more. The patient’s response is evaluated following each treatment, until symptoms subside. This approach is particularly applicable in cases of trauma, herniated discs and acute back problems.
Once symptoms have diminished, it is recommended to treat three times per week until the patient’s condition is stable, and then to reduce treatments to twice per week, until an improvement of 80% or more is achieved.
With acute conditions, completion of treatment generally takes from one to three weeks.
Chronic Conditions
With chronic conditions such as osteoarthritis, weekly maintenance therapy may be required during two to three months, or longer in certain instances.
Ending the BioFlex treatment program is appropriate when:
